Charles helped Emily put the girls to bed, then went back out. It was a hard decision because for an hour the relationship had felt fresh and alive again. He hadn't realized there was a problem until the joy of the emotions hit him.

Now he was worried but didn't understand why. He laughed a little crazily as he walked down one of the long hallways. She couldn't leave him now, could she? They were in this together until the end. Where exactly would she go if she was going to dump him?

Don’t be a jealous idiot.

She could have any man she wanted and not just because she was gorgeous. She was charming and loving and made him a better person. Who didn't want that? She could be the queen of the world with the snap of her fingers.

Stopping at the bottom of the stairwell, he tried to remember where he had been going. Pacing back and forth was another habit that Emily didn't like. He'd been walking off is nervous energy with no real destination, he realized.

This was one of the nonessential levels. Everything had been mothballed and locked up. The hallway stretching away from the stairs was dimly illuminated by emergency lights.

His first thought was that this could be his new sanctuary, some place he could pace all he wanted without bothering anyone. He started to get excited, imagining the creative new ideas he would generate this way.

As it turned out, there was no need to pace back and forth because he could walk the block, taking the first left and then the next and so on. He was halfway around the loop when he heard the voices.

He stopped, then felt guilty for listening.

The voice of Patrick Kingston was easily recognizable. He was from the Midwest with a voice like the ringmaster for a traveling circus. But he'd either been trained as an orator or had picked up a formal style that concealed his native dialect.

Charles recognized at least two other voices from high-level board meetings but couldn't put names with faces to them just by the sound.

The hissing clatter of words that turned his blood to Ice interrupted the argument.

His mind went blank. He wanted to turn and run but couldn't remember how. Cold pain seeped into his nerves. After what felt like several minutes, he was able to press his back against the wall and hold himself up with effort.

What would David or Laura do?

The sound of his rushing blood filled his ears. His heart pounded noisily. He'd never experienced anything like this and it scared him. At the same time, it felt pretty good.

The hallway was still empty save for the dim emergency lighting every twenty or thirty feet. Each LED lamp in the ceiling made a small circle on the floor below it. The elevators looked so far away they might've well have been part of an Alice in Wonderland landscape.

He pressed his ear to the door and listened.

The hissing voice spoke English but he couldn't understand it.
